Absorbing Roman poet Ovid’s tales of transformation in “Metamorphoses” and adding his own dash of art-historical figuration and contemporary pop culture, Mark Ryden broaches new terrain with “The Tree Show.” “Arcadian Gothic” might hint at the nature of this new work, and fans of Ryden will find familiar preoccupations in these new paintings, drawings and sculptures—made since his first solo show in 1998—transposed to new pastures. Never reluctant to freight his work with layers of reference that range from Renaissance landscape and Neoclassical portrait painting to occultism and literature, in his latest works Ryden combines the arcane with pop-cultural images as ground from which to make his carefully executed leaps into fantasy. Ryden’s series includes depictions of oak trees consuming children, floating tree stumps with “seeing” eyes, imaginary wood nymphs and mythological characters who personify Nature herself. Ryden paints his characters with a masterful, porcelain glow reminiscent of Ingres and renders his trees with a care that evokes Audubon’s botanical illustration. Several of his paintings are presented in elaborately carved frames that project their narratives beyond the canvas. “The Tree Show” offers reproductions of these paintings and sculptures alongside the fruits of Ryden’s research on the tree as myth—drawing from the Buddha’s Bodhi Tree to Adam and Eve, the Sephiroth of the Kabbalah and matters of ecological science. As such, this volume constitutes an enticing dossier on Ryden’s encyclopedic exploration of the subject and reproduces in its entirety this series centered around the arboreal world.

The breathtaking paintings from french painter Amylee show gorgeous Women as exotic flowers that blossom in all their glory, evoking the emotional response in the viewer. Here is our exclusive interview with Amylee!
L: Please, introduce yourself
А: I’m Amylee, fashion painter, 33 years old. I was born in south of France. Now I’m working in Paris for several years.  Curious about everything, my resume has grown throughout my activities and encounters. From Design to Fashion, Fashion to Decoration, and Decoration to Art, I came through all of this with the same acute view ; a unique perception that I like using in my paintings. I love telling stories about Woman, create with different patterns, and inspire me with fashion shows and 70’s style. An other vision of Fashion !
L: Your works are so colorful and resilient. It seems that your life is myriad of happy moments and interesting events. Is it true?
А: My paintings are always charged up with a positive energy associated with a elegant touch of “glamorous-Pop”, so characteristic in my creations. In my art collections, I mix simplicity and exuberance, Plastic Arts and Fashion, paint and collages.

L: How your working place looks ? Can you describe it?
А: Unfortunately, I don’t have a big studio. I work in a little room in my apartment.
One day, I hope so setting me in a huge studio looking like a gallery with white walls, big windows and a lot of space to tidy up my art equipment.
L: Who is the person you will never forget?
А: I suppose my grand-mother. A woman who liked drawing so much. An adorable person.

L: What’s some art or culture or whatever that inspires you?
А: In my paintings, different worlds are facing each other ! Pop culture/Barocco style, fashion/comics, Street Art/Decorative Arts.
L: Do you love to travel? In which country you will not come as a tourist?
А: I love travelling for inspiration. I love meeting people. I love art of all kinds, and simple textures of everyday things : painting, drawing, fashion, music are all passions of mine. I spend a lot of time creating and running my business and traveling to encounter new ideas. But, I prefer to go to warm countries. I’m afraid of the cold.
L: Which one from your projects bring you the most pleasure in process of drawing/creating?
А: My biggest hobby is following all trends in Arts, Design, Fashion and connecting with people. It became a pleasure to me, if my project mix and match it to create an other vision of Arts.

L: And our special question, imagine that you are sweets, what kind it would be and why?
А: In France, we have Dragibus sweets. Little colors balls to fruity taste. Mhmm there are sweet and so pop !!!
Thank you Amylee !
